| Robert
C. Byrd, Democrat from West Virginia; former member of the Ku Klux Klan
shouldn't throw stones:
Fox News Sunday, Byrd: "There
are white s.
I've seen a lot of white s
in my time." "I'm gonna use that word. But we all just need
to work together to make our country a better country."
In a 1940s letter renouncing his
membership: "[I
will never serve in the military]
with a Negro by my side." "I should die a thousand times and see
Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than see this beloved
land of ours become degraded by Race Mongrels, a throwback to the Blackest
Specimen of the Wilds."
He spent 14 hours filibustering
against the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
He voted against the only two
blacks ever nominated for the U.S. Supreme Court, Thurgood Marshall and
Clarence Thomas.
