A
Reader's Digest Mistake From
the back cover of the November 2000
issue
-
The
"ephemeral butterfly" is a less than ephemeral dried, pinned and Mounted
Dead Moth, a Polyphemus Moth to be precise.
It appears
that photographer Keith Carter pinned a dead Polyphemus to the toe of his
boot and snapped this heart warming, if not fraudulent photo.

I
direct your attention to the back cover of your November edition. It appears
that photographer Keith Carter pinned a dead Polyphemus MOTH to the toe
of his boot and snapped this heart warming, if not fraudulent photo. MOTHS,
unlike butterflies, fly at NIGHT. This particular moth will find it very
hard going with the pin through its thorax.
